The German cockroach Is among the most common roaches found in apartment houses, restaurants and hotels. German cockroach (eggs included) are “brought in” usually on individual’s belongings, luggage, boxes or packages. They produce the most eggs, have the shortest development cycle, the best survival rate of the young, and the most flexible feeding habits of most of the roaches.
The German cockroach is a cosmopolitan species, meaning, they are widely spread to other nations, especially those with tropical climates. The mature female German roach can lay 35 to 45 Egg cases or called ootheca, which also encapsulates multiple eggs. These eggs hatch in approximately 1 month and the nymphs thrive to survive and develop into adults between 6 weeks to 6 months. German roaches can multiply fast, generally 3 to 4 generations per year. German cockroaches are nocturnal pests, meaning to say they are busy nighttime creepy crawlers. They can thrive both indoors and outside and prefers wet, humid areas such as kitchens and bathrooms in houses and commercial properties.
These creepy crawlers will leave marks that indicate their presence such as excrement and egg cases (ootheca). They can also emit foul odors too because of their growing infestation. Their excrement droppings that look like black pepper. DO NOT simply clean up these excrements without wearing protective equipment. The bacteria from these excrement droppings are known to trigger allergies and asthma. It is important to take note of the location of this excrement to treat in these areas, however, remove it using a vacuum cleaner as soon as possible. The vast majority of the roach population is located in the kitchen or bathrooms.
If the population is large enough, they will spill over to other chambers. These roaches are mostly active at night. If German roaches are seen active during the day, it probably is because of overcrowding in their hiding places or a shortage of food and water supply. Cracks and crevices are their harborage areas; they spend about 75% of the time in these harborages. First instar nymphs require a crack of about 1/32″ whereas, adults need inch width. German cockroach nymphs are smaller compared to most other cockroaches; thus, they have the ability to conceal themselves in many places and stay protected.
